Ottawa Little Theatre is launching its 105th season tonight with a production of Educating Rita and a brand new, fully licensed auditorium at 400 King Edward Avenue.
Imagine new, larger, and more comfortable seats, plus improved sightlines, acoustics and accessibility as you enjoy Willy Russell’s award-winning play. Educating Rita is a hilarious, and often moving account of a young women’s determination to change her life.
First produced for the stage in 1980, this play is as engaging, relevant, and moving as ever. The desire to improve oneself is a timeless idea and one that hairdresser Rita feels. She wants an education. But does her tutor, the jaded, heavy-drinking Frank have anything to teach her? Or, might he be the one with lessons to learn from the fresh and feisty Rita? Sterling Lynch directs this comedy and it stars Allison Haley as Rita and Mike Kennedy as Frank.
Ottawa Little Theatre has been part of Ottawa’s art community for over 100 years, making it the longest continuously running community theatre in Canada. As a charitable not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization, it is financially dependent upon ticket sales, donations and sponsors for its operation and maintenance.
Educating Rita opens Wednesday, September 20 and runs until October 7, with Sunday matinees on September 24 and October 1. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. (Wednesday to Saturday) and Sunday matinees are at 2:00 p.m. Tickets cost $27, $24 for seniors, and $12 for students.
