Cool Stuff at the Shenkman

Are you heading to the Shenkman Arts Centre for classes, a live performance or to drop the kids off at a summer camp? Yup. There’s certainly a whole lot going on at the arts hub in Orleans this summer.

Since you’re making the trip, why not spend an extra few minutes and check out the art exhibition by Ottawa sculptor Maria Saracino? You’ll love her artworks and so will the kids!

A figurative sculptor, Maria has a month-long exhibit at the AOE Gallery at the Shenkman through August 17 during the Beau’s Art event. There’s an opportunity to meet the artist at a vernissage July 26 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Maria’s realistic, yet whimsical characters are sculpted from polymer clay, textiles and resin. As a master polymer clay artist, her work has won numerous awards and been featured in publications in Canada and the US. Her work has also been part of three museum exhibits.

The theme of the AOE exhibit is Canadiana and the sculptures explore classic Canadian scenarios, culture and pastimes. Some of Maria’s biggest influences are figurative sculptors Ron Mueck and Joe Fafard, as well as the illustrative work of Norman Rockwell. Like Rockwell, her sculptures capture candid moments in time.

The Shenkman Arts Center is at 245 Centrum Boulevard in Orleans. You can also see Maria’s work at the Orange Art Gallery, 290 City Centre Drive in Ottawa.
