Kayla Maduk kicks like a girl – a girl who is the best on the planet at her chosen sport.
How’s that for kicks?

Kayla Maduk showed her moves at a fundraiser held at Ross’ Your Independent Grocer September 7.
A third-degree black belt, the local teen holds the title as International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) junior world champion. She earned the honour in New Zealand in 2011 when she won gold and the most medals for Canada. You’ll find the details on her website at ikicklikeagirl.com.
Now Kayla’s gearing up to go for gold at the ITF Taekwon-Do World Championships in Spain October 23 to 27. Over 60 countries are expected to send their top competitors to the event and the 17-year-old from Ottawa has been training hard, with her sights set on more world titles.
To get this far, to earn a position on the national team and a spot at the worlds, has involved huge effort for Kayla and her family, not to mention expense. That’s why there are a couple of local fundraisers in the works to support Kayla in her quest.
The first is a luncheon at the Barrhaven Legion this Saturday, September 14. It’s from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 3500 Fallowfield Road and festivities will include silent auctions, live entertainment, a 50/50 draw, special guest appearances, slide shows, face painting and bake sales. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth aged eight to 16. There’s no charge for kids younger than eight.
You can reserve tickets at ikicklikeagirl.com or visit the legion.
Next up, there’s a fundraiser at Greenfield’s Pub September 19 from 7 to 10 p.m. The pub is located at the corner of Greenbank Road and Larkin Drive (in the Barrhaven Mall) and the $5 entry fee will be donated to Kayla.
