Shopping and Sweets

There’s everything to love about Shopping and Sweets. This popular annual event, presented by Nayla Natural Care and A Little Bit of Momsense, is taking place Saturday, November 30, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Shenkman Arts Centre in Orleans.

Admission is free, you’ll find tons of great products and treats for sale and … the icing on the cake? All the proceeds go to charity. This year, Shopping and Sweets will support the Christmas Exchange and the Orleans Cumberland Community Resource Centre Christmas Food Support Program. Both organizations will also be part of the celebration.

Now that’s sweet!

This is the fourth year for the festive community event.  It began back in 2010 when Rebecca Stanisic, owner of A Little Bit of Momsense, and Gwen Leron, owner of Nayla Natural Care, started discussing local business. The conversation grew to encompass everything from shopping and cupcakes to fundraising. From that mix of ingredients, they had the recipe for a truly delectable Ottawa occasion called Shopping and Sweets.

“We timed it to happen before the holidays to encourage local shopping for gift giving,” Rebecca explains, adding, “Proceeds from the event have always gone to support local charity.”

And the spirit of sharing is clearly evident. For instance, not only does Sylvia Higginson (the creative mind behind Cakeadoodledoo) bake beautiful cakes, cupcakes and cake pops to be sold, she also donates her time and a portion of her cupcake and cake pop sales to the charities.  “The cupcakes are a popular draw and often sell out!” Rebecca notes. And thanks to the lead sponsorship of Gemma Laurin of The Laurin Team, Ottawa’s Mortgage Team, Rebecca and Gwen can donate even more back to the charities.

For shoppers, the event is appealing for a lot of reasons. Since it takes place at the same time the Shenkman Arts Centre holds its Baz’Art artisan show, it’s a one-stop-shopping experience for everyone on your list. Shopping and Sweets vendors include Elm Hill Kids, Peekaboo Beans, Epicure Selections, Arbonne, Stella & Dot, Givopoly and others.

It promises to be a great time. See you there!

You’ll have a hard time not putting yourself on the shopping list, the array of products is so appealing.

The selection is sweet … and spicy too!

You’ll be able to get gifts for many people on your list.

Vicky Bisson will be on hand with the award-winning Peekaboo Beans play wear collection.
