The Ottawa Public Library, in partnership with the comic book store Wizard’s Tower, is pleased to welcome Canadian comic creators Meags Fitzgerald, Ryan North, and Josephine Rioux for an all-day event: Comics in Conversation, on Saturday, May 6, at the Ruth E. Dickinson branch (100 Malvern), as part of Free Comic Book Day, a nationwide celebration of comics.
The event will kick off at 1:00 p.m. with some fun activities for all: trivia, comic-themed crafts, and picture-taking with props and a fun backdrop. Wizard’s Tower will be on site marking Free Comic Book Day with selections of comic books to give away. They will also have some books available for purchase, however please note that all sales will be cash only.
At 1:30 p.m. don’t miss the author panel featuring Meags Fitzgerald (Photobooth, Long Red Hair) and Ryan North (Adventure Time, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) talking about all things comics. The panel will include an audience Q&A, with an autograph session to follow.
From 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Josephine Rioux author of Cat’s Cradle will be hosting an illustration workshop for teens. Starting with an imaginative exercise that will set the stage for their story, participants will then focus on weaving together words and pictures into a short comic of their own creation. This workshop is open to teens 12-18 years old. Registration will be required the day of the event and a sign-up sheet will be available at the branch.
Attendees will also be entered in a draw for a chance to win tickets to Ottawa Comiccon, happening May 12-14 at the EY Centre. The OPL will also be present at Comiccon with the mini Bookmobile.
This free event is open to the general public. No matter your age or tastes, there is sure to be something for everyone.
