There are some great incentives to get Ottawa kids and families involved in running. For instance, the upcoming Tamarack Race Weekend includes two distances for kids and families.

The Family 2K is at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 27. This is a fun event for the whole family.

The Kids Marathon is on Sunday, May 28 at 8 a.m. For this challenge, kids run 40k in advance of Race Weekend and finish their last 1.2 km at the event. The Kids Marathon is open to kids in grades 3 to 8.

For all ages, Tamarack Race Weekend promises to be an inspiring and exciting family outing. Music and onsite entertainment will be featured throughout the  weekend. A full schedule is available at

If you’re hoping to get your kids off the couch and on the path to being more active, you’re also in luck. There’s a new offering to promote a lifelong commitment to fitness among local kids.

Run Ottawa has created the Kids Run Ottawa program. Geared to kids aged six to 12, it’s a 14-week initiative that focuses on the key ingredients of an active, healthy lifestyle including daily exercise, smart food choices, and a positive mindset. The DPA (Daily Physical Activity) Resource Guide and the  Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum are used as guidelines. Weekly themes include Nutrition, Body, Flexibility, Strength, Safety, Hydration; opportunities are suggested for incorporating cross-curricular learning, critical-thinking and numeracy through DPA.

The program is available to parents and schools through region. And all kids should be able to take part. Run Ottawa has partnered with Shoe Bank Canada and local retailers to distribute new and used shoes, free of charge, to kids in need at participating schools.
The aim is to ensure all kids have the proper footwear to be part of the Kids
Run Ottawa program.
